This 19th-century engraving, executed by Francesco Bartolozzi after Antoine Borel, presents Queen Margaret of Anjou (1430–1482) with her son Edward, Prince of Wales (1453–1471), in the historical scene titled “Queen Margaret of Anjou and her son attacked by a robber.” The print is mounted in a rectangular giltwood frame with decorative beading and a black surround mat that corners an oval image at the center. The piece combines a classical engraving technique with a formal presentation suitable for display in traditional interiors.
Artist and origin
Francesco Bartolozzi (c. 1727–1815) was an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in London and served as Engraver to the King. He is renowned for tonal, stipple-based engravings and connections to leading painters of his era. This work situates a historical subject within his late-19th-century reproduction tradition, following a composition by Antoine Borel.
