Maker / Artist Details

R. Anthony (Tony) Askew (born 1939) is a Santa Barbara–based artist and educator known for abstract watercolors, printmaking, and mixed-media works. He founded the Reynolds Gallery (now the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art) and taught art at Westmont College from 1984 to 2008. Askew studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara (B.A. in Fine Art and Sociology) and earned an M.A. in Printmaking from California State University, Los Angeles. He has long explored monotype printing as a signature process, producing painterly, single-impression works that emphasize layered color and texture. His color palette often reflects desert landscapes and light influences, with a focus on formal abstraction that foregrounds composition and tonal balance.
