Description

This framed incunable woodcut print depicts Avicenna (Ibn Sina, c. 980–1037), shown seated and holding a vessel, with his name printed above in Gothic type.

The image originates from Hartmann Schedel’s Liber Chronicarum (the Nuremberg Chronicle), published in Nuremberg in 1493 by Anton Koberger. The woodcut illustrations are attributed to the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff.

Faint printed text is visible through/behind the image, consistent with a fragment removed from a printed book leaf. The piece is professionally matted and housed in a decorative silver-tone frame.

An older typewritten collection label inside the frame reads: “MICHAEL WOLGEMUTH. FIRST GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATION OF A DOCTOR. ORIGINAL WOODCUT FROM THE NUREMBERG CHRONICLE. GERMAN. 1493. FRAGMENT.”
